Fort Ross, California

This was a fantastic "living history" field trip for both parents and children. The students learned about Fort Ross and it's place in California history during class time and did a report on the subject. Each child was assigned a character to study and a persona to adopt. They made costumes and were assigned roles for the trip, and came to Fort Ross for two days to live like the residents did in the early 1800's.

This was a challenging field trip because our first day was foggy and drizzly in the morning, turning to a light rain in the afternoon, and a heavy rain over night. The work groups completed their assignments despite the rain: the hunters fished, the gardeners gardened, the cooks cooked, the militia received their muskets and produced (and raised) a fort flag. (Our hearty cooks prepared a fabulous dinner under very difficult conditions. The rain broke just long enough for us to eat outside.) We were treated to a professional story teller to conclude our first day. Our second day began with fog in the morning, giving way to sunshine for the remainder of our day: breakfast, a hike to the North Cove, the firing of the canon, lunch and our departure.

This web site is not a recap of any of the historical details or characters surrounding Fort Ross, but a presentation of the photographs taken to document our trip.

This site is divided into ten pages comprised of thumbnail photos. If you click on any of the thumbnails, you will get a larger image to view. If you want to view all the photos on a page as a slideshow, click on the first photo, then page through the series by clicking "next picture". The complete navigation grid is available at the bottom of each thumbnail page. Return to this page by clicking "thumbnails", then click "here". One last footnote: when you are viewing the large images, depending on the size of your monitor, photos in portrait orientation may be longer than a single screen; watch for a slide bar on the right side of your browser window to view the full photo.

All photos were taken by Ron Licht (except one which was taken by Maggie).
